Climate and equipment

CLIMAT

Costa Rica is a tropical country with two seasons: a dry season (November to early May) and a rainy season (May to October). During the rainy season, mornings are generally sunny, with showers in the middle of the afternoon. Temperature differences are small throughout the year. The altitude is the determining factor for the temperature: San José, at 1100 metres above sea level, experiences an eternal spring with temperatures of 16 to 28°. The coastal regions are warmer (21 to 32°). Due to its geographical position, the country is not affected by the hurricanes that regularly hit the Caribbean. The water temperature varies between 27 and 31° all year round.

DTIME DIFFERENCE

Minus 7 hours in winter, minus 8 hours in summer.

So, in summer, when it is 8pm in France, it is midday in Costa Rica.

VESTABLISHMENTS

As a general rule, it is advisable to bring practical cotton clothing and long-sleeved T-shirts for the jungle. Tennis shoes are preferable to sandals. Heels should be avoided. Bring a light mackintosh, and a woolen jacket for the central valley. It is important to protect yourself from the sun and heat (cap, sunglasses, sunscreen) and to hydrate abundantly during excursions and a stay at the beach. Get a pair of binoculars to better observe the fauna and flora.

Health

SANTÉ

No vaccinations are compulsory, the health situation in the country is satisfactory. Ideally, the vaccine against Covid-19 is recommended for a more serene trip. Have a mask and hydroalcolic gel available.

Water is potable everywhere, except in some very remote areas. The network of hospitals and dispensaries of the local equivalent of the Social Security covers the whole country. The care given is of excellent quality, the techniques used are modern and the doctors well trained. San José also has high quality private hospitals.

Travellers on special medication should bring their own medication.

Formalities

VISA

No visa is required by the Costa Rican authorities, but travellers whose flight makes a stopover in the United States must have a machine-readable passport. Otherwise, they must apply for a transit visa from the US authorities before departure.

DOUANE

Costa Rican customs are not very particular about tourists, either on arrival or departure, but there may be routine checks. People undergoing medical treatment should bring their prescription. Visitors are allowed to bring 200 cigarettes or 25 cigars, two litres of alcoholic drinks and four small bottles of perfume.

CHANGE

The currency is the colon (currently 1 dollar = +/- 570 colon).

IT IS A LITTLE DIFFICULT TO CHANGE EUROS IN COSTA RICA. It is therefore advisable to bring dollars with you before departure.

American currency is easily exchanged in banks and hotels. Credit cards

international credit are commonly accepted
