From the capital of the Sultanate to the Land of Poets

Breakfast and pick-up of your 4X4 vehicle (guided tour available from this day: please contact us). You will be free to continue exploring the capital (suggestions: old Muscat and the Franco-Omani Museum), then take the most direct route to Nizwa, with a must-see first stop at the Great Mosque of Sultan Qaboos. Fanja and Samail are also worth a visit (forts, castles and datiers). Arrival in Nizwa (suggested visit: the fort and the Souk).
For experienced 4X4 drivers, leave Muscat early and take the road to the mountain oases (3-hour journey without stops; allow double the time to include stops and visits). First stop is BARKA, where you will see fishermen bringing in and selling their fish. From here, you will head towards the mountains and take the wadi road, which is only accessible by 4X4. You will pass through 3-4 small villages where, in the shade of palm trees, you can stop to relax and enjoy the breathtaking mountain scenery. Visit the village of BILAD SAYT, a picturesque village located at an altitude of 950 m in the Western Hajar (Hajar al Gharbi). If you have time, you can go as far as Wadi Ghul and its old village before reaching Nizwa.

Day 4

Nizwa

Jebel Akhdar

Jebel Akhdar

Breakfast. Suggestions: Bahla Fort and its potters, BIRKAT AL MAUZ, a small village where some of the ochre mud houses have been renovated and boast beautiful carved wooden doors. A falaj (very ancient irrigation system) runs through the village and feeds the palm groves. From here, you will climb up to the JEBEL AKHDAR "green mountain". It owes its name to the many crops that cover its slopes. Although the mountain is rugged and uneven, it is lush and full of small villages. The most densely populated part is the Saiq plateau, which rises to an altitude of 2,000 metres. Here you will find many fruit trees (cherry, peach, apple, pomegranate, etc.) and terraced fields of onions and, above all, roses, used to make rosewater, which the Omanis use for its medicinal properties and as a home fragrance. Free time for lunch. Return to Nizwa for the night

Day 5

Suggestions : AL HAMRA where in the heart of the hamlet you will discover its old houses, Wadhi Ghul (a very deep canyon with a beautiful palm grove), Bait Al Safaa museum, JEBEL SHAMS which owes its name to the beauty of the sunrises and sunsets. It is from the Shams plateau that you will have the most impressive view of Oman's largest canyon.

Our opinion

The Omani people are extremely friendly and welcoming. The destination, far from mass tourism, offers quality tourism. Despite the heat, you must respect local culture and traditions (no short clothing, no alcohol outside certain hotels). Men and women must wear swimming costumes only in hotel swimming pools and on private beaches.
It is important not to venture into the wadis without checking the weather. Tours and visits may be cancelled due to adverse weather forecasts and the risk of flooding.
French-speaking guides are subject to availability. If no guide is available for your travel dates, we will suggest the best English-speaking guide available.
