Welcome to the Orang Darat or "people of the earth" of Sumatra, an island that will appeal to lovers of sumptuous landscapes and authentic encounters. Sumatra is also the island of the orang outang: from rehabilitation centres to their release back into the jungle, you'll meet some very endearing people!

Day 1
Paris, Medan
Departure from Paris on a scheduled airline.
Services and overnight stay on board.
Day 2
Arrival at Medan airport.
Welcome by your English-speaking guide and transfer to the hotel to settle in. Free time to relax.
Overnight at the hotel.
Day 3
Medan, Tangkahan
Breakfast at the hotel.
City tour visiting the sultan's palace, the great mosque and the Chinese temple, then departure for Tangkahan via Binjai and Batang Serangan.
Arrival in Tangkahan in the late afternoon. Check-in at the lodge.
Day 4
Tangkahan
Breakfast at the lodge.
Departure for an elephant excursion accompanied by a mahout. Cross the river through the jungle around Tangkahan, then take a trip on the river in a local boat to reach the local villages and discover their daily lives.
Return to the lodge.
Day 5
Tangkahan, Bulit Lawang
Breakfast at the Lodge.
Departure for Bukit Lawang by jeep through the plantations on a jungle road.
Stop en route at palm plantations.
Visit to a school.
Arrive in Bukit Lawang and check into hotel.
Overnight at the hotel.
Day 6
Bukit Lawang
Breakfast at the hotel.
Set off on a hike to observe the orangutans.
Lunch on your own.
Continue trekking in Leuser National Park to explore the flora and fauna.
Return to the hotel in the late afternoon.
Overnight at the hotel.
Day 7
Bohorok, Brastagi
Breakfast at the hotel.
Departure for Brastagi via the villages of Sembahe and Sibolangit.
Visit the traditional Batak Karo village in Peceren, the Brastagi fruit market and Gundaling Hill to see the two active volcanoes: Mount Sinabung and Mount Sibayak.
Check-in at the hotel.
Dinner at leisure. Night at the hotel.
Day 8
Brastagi, Lake Toba, Samorir Island
Breakfast at the hotel.
Departure for Lake Toba.
En route, visit the Sipisopiso waterfalls and Pematang Purba for its two-century-old great house.
Ferry across the lake to the island of Samosir.
Overnight in a lodge.
Day 9
Breakfast at the lodge.
Drive to the island of Samosir, known as the homeland of the Batak tribe in Indonesia.
Visits to Tomok (sarcophagi of Batak kings), Ambarita (court of justice of former tribal chiefs) and Simanindo (traditional Tor-Tor dance and museum).
Discover the Pangururan springs.
Overnight at the lodge.
Day 10
Samosir Island, Medan
Breakfast.
Cross the lake to Parapat, then on to Medan airport.
Flight to Paris.

Because of its location near the equator, in a tropical region, the island has only two seasons:
- A dry season: May to November-December
- Rainy season: January to April.
In general, July is the coolest and driest month of the year, while January sees the highest rainfall. Note that it can also rain during the dry season, but more often at the end of the day or at night.
The island enjoys pleasant temperatures almost all year round (26°C on average). It can be very hot, but never unbearably so.
But beware of sunburn!
The days are always the same length. The sun rises around 6 a.m. and sets at 6 p.m. at the latest.
Be up to date with your vaccinations.
No vaccinations required, but recommended: Hepatitis A

PASSPORT & VISAS
The Indonesian authorities require that the passport expire 6 months after the date of entry into Indonesia.
An entry visa for Indonesia is required for all French nationals since 1 February 2004.
Cost: 25$ for a 30-day visa. The visa is issued at the airport.
