Climate and equipment

Because of its location and contrasting topography, Yunnan enjoys an extremely varied climate. It has just about every type of climate: humid tropical in the south (Jinghong, Hekou, Ruili), temperate in the centre and east (Kunming, Dali, Quibei, Zhaotong) and mountainous in the north-west (Zhongdian, Deqin). For example, you can eat mangoes on a tree in Jinghong and throw snowballs at each other in Zhongdian, 1,000km away! The difference in temperature is also noticeable during the day, even in summer when the nights are always much cooler. Located in a tropical zone, Yunnan has a rainy season from May to October, including in the north.
For your trip to Yunnan, it's best to pack all-weather gear: woollens, windbreakers, impers, but also T-shirts and light trousers for hiking.
